Butler West Wing Addition & Beecher Center for Technology
Butler Institute of American Art
Youngstown, Ohio

Since the Butler was one of the most historically significant buildings on Wick Avenue, the West Wing Addition had to relate to the original McKim, Meade & White structure in an engaging yet unobtrusive way. The new parti connected the ends of the existing galleries which flanked an open exterior courtyard, resolving a major circulation problem. Balcony galleries were added to the court and it was enclosed with a skylight. The simple geometric shape of the addition is proportional to the original gallery, without replicating its ornate detail. A glass enclosed portico projects from this mass on axis with the original entrance, framing a monumental stair and providing views to a sculpture terrace.
The Beecher Center for Technology in the Arts is a joint project between Youngstown State University and The Butler Institute of American Art. The project provides facilities for students and artists to research, teach, produce and exhibit art, using an electronic technology medium. The facility contains a 4,000 SF creative studio and production lab; a 1,600 SF, 150-seat multimedia theater; as well as galleries specifically designed for the display of technological art. All spaces in the building are pre-wired for data and telephones.
