Johnston-Monroe Intermediate School
Johnstown-Monroe Local School District
Johnstown, Ohio

The Searfoss Middle School was used as one of Johnstown Monroe School District’s elementary schools until 2017 when the new elementary school opened. After 2017, the building sat vacant as the district continued to grow, prompting the need to renovate the building to accommodate the expanding student population by using it as a new intermediate school.
Size: 39,450 sf
Project Scope: New Construction
Delivery Method: Renovation, Addition
Its location adjacent to the Middle School makes it ideal for a transitional school for students moving from elementary to middle school. The original construction took place in the early 1960s and consisted of masonry bearing construction with a flat roof. The renovated building includes 25 classrooms, a full service kitchen, small group rooms, and a multipurpose room. A new roof was added to the building allowing for new mechanical systems to be run in the added attic space. The renovation of the existing 27,000 square feet and addition of just over 12,000 square feet, upgrades the existing building to include modern technology in the classrooms, an efficient heating and cooling system for improved ventilation, and upgraded plumbing systems. A new main entrance to the building creates a secure entrance for the school, allowing the administration to safely monitor visitors to the building. The existing courtyard was converted to a media center, with high transom windows installed to allow daylight into the interior of the building with the new roof form.
