Champion Local School District Selects BSHM for New PK-8 School

On February 16th, members of the Champion School Board and staff from the OFCC met to interview the three top ranked architectural design firms who responded to a request for qualifications (RFQ).  BSHM Architects was selected to design the new $31,300,000 PK-8 School building. The project will be administered through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC).   The project delivery will be done through a Construction Manager at Risk (CMR) method.  The 126,956 square foot building will be designed to house approximately 1,010 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade and will be built on 20 acres of land purchased from the Township, just to the south of the existing Champion High School. The building will be sited to create a PK-12 campus and will take into consideration any future renovations, additions or replacement of the High School. The bond issue included funding (a locally funded initiative or LFI) for the construction of baseball, softball, track, and football fields. A requirement of the OFCC is that the building be designed to incorporate sustainable features that will enable it to achieve a minimum certification of LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) a nationally recognized third-party organization that evaluates the effectiveness of a building’s sustainable features.

In the next several weeks, the Administration and teaching staff will be meeting with the BSHM Architects and their design team’s educational planner, Chuck Warner of Warner Concepts, Dublin, Ohio, and other consultants to prepare a Program of Requirements (POR) for the building and will be creating preliminary concepts for the building and site plan.

The project is targeted to be complete for occupancy prior to the start of the school year in September of 2018. The current middle and elementary schools will stay in operation until then. Construction of the new building will not affect classes at the High School.
