Douglass Hall, a 1929 landmark at the College of Wooster, underwent a transformative renovation led by BSHM Architects. The 34,350 SF residence hall originally housed 115 beds; the project added 3,000 SF of new space and converted 8,500 SF of attic area, increasing capacity to 127 beds. The design modernized the facility while preserving and enhancing its historic character through thoughtful exterior and interior improvements.

The renovation delivered revitalized student rooms, multiple student community venues, private bathing and restrooms, and support spaces, along with new lighting, electrical, plumbing, and a fully modernized HVAC systems. Every improvement was designed to elevate comfort and energy performance without compromising the building’s Collegiate Gothic historic character.
The completed project re-imagines campus residency at Douglass Hall as a vibrant, modern living environment—one that honors its history while meeting the expectations of today’s students.
Project Highlights (CM as Owner Agent Delivery Method):
- New electrical, gas, water and waste line services, fire alarm and suppressions, digital access control and technology, and a high‑efficiency heating, cooling/ventilation system.
- ADA upgrades throughout, including a new elevator
- Renovated gathering/study areas, student rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, laundry and utility areas
- Basement waterproofing and envelope improvements.
- Updated finishes, signage, windows, doors, and roofing
- Cohesive interior design aligned with the hall’s heritage
