McDonough Museum of Art

John J. McDonough, local physician and art patron, provided a gift to Youngstown State University to be used to construct an art museum. As requested by Dr. McDonough, the entire building is designed for the display of art. The main stairway within the building serves as a skylit gallery connecting the Upper Ground/Street Level and the Lower Ground/Parking Garage Level. The focus of the building’s interior is a double height Installation Gallery, a space for creating and performing art, as well as for displaying it. The building is covered in white porcelain tile and metal panels, presenting itself as a discrete architectural object in the “garden” perceived in counterpoint to the surrounding existing large scale structures.
