Adler Art AcademyYoungstown, Ohio
Project Description
This modest project converted the vacant upper floors of a former storefront and an adjacent exterior lightwell into a new Art Academy. The program pairs inner city youngsters with student teachers/mentors under the aegis of Youngstown State University’s School of Fine and Performing Arts. Renovated facilities include dance/drama/art studios, instrumental and vocal music rooms, administrative spaces and a two-story skylit gallery space created by enclosing the existing lightwell. The facade of the theater was restored, reintroducing natural daylighting. A new digital marquee and vertical sign modeled after the original replaced an unimaginative duranodic bronze canopy installed in 1969.
